Configuring a PPPoE Instance

Note:This article applies to ScreenOS 5.0.
Note:You can configure a specific instance of PPPoE with a username and password and other parameters, and bind the instance to an interface.


To configure a PPPoE Instance, perform the following steps:

Step one:Open the WebUI. For more information on accessing the WebUI, select your product from the list below: Step two:From the NetScreen options menu, click Network, and then click PPPoE.

Step threeTo configure a PPPoE Instance, enter the necessary information:
  • PPPoE Instance: Enter the name of the instance. Choose a descriptive name to help you identify the instance.
  • Bound to Interface: Select the interface to which you want to bind the PPPoE instance.
  • Username: Enter the user name for the PPPoE connection.
  • Password: Enter the password for the PPPoE connection.
  • Authentication: Select the authentication method.
    • Any means both CHAP and PAP authentication is used.
    • CHAP means only CHAP authentication is used.
    • PAP means only PAP authentication is used.
  • Access Concentrator: Specifies the AC to be used for the PPPoE connection.
  • Service: Specifies the service for the PPPoE connection.
  • PPP lcp Echo Retries: Specifies the number of unacknowledged LCP Echo requests that occur before the connection is terminated. Specify a value between 1-30.
  • PPP lcp Echo Timeout: Specifies the number of seconds between LCP echo request transmissions. Specify a value between 1-1000.
  • Auto-Connect: Specifies the number of seconds before a previously-closed connection is automatically reinitiated. Specify a value between 0-10000. A value of 0 disables this function.
  • Idle Disconnect: Specifies the number of minutes that the connection is idle before the NetScreen device terminates the connection. A value of 0 disables this function and the connection is never terminated.
  • Clear IP on Disconnect: Removes IP information on connection termination.
  • Static IP: Specifies that the connection uses the IP address assigned to the device's interface.
  • Automatic Update of DHCP Servers DNS Parameters: When you initiate a PPPoE connection, your ISP automatically provides the IP addresses for the Untrust zone interface and the IP addresses for the Domain Name Service (DNS) servers. Enable this option if you want the NetScreen device to overwrite the local settings with the DNS settings it receives via PPPoE.
