Summary:

This article give an example of how to configure a MLPPP T1 bundle.

Problem or Goal:
Symptoms:
  • MLPPP is not working, the interfaces will not come up.
  • MLPPP is not working after upgrading to Junos OS 10.0
  • The output of 'show interface ls'  in Junos OS release 9.x or 'show interface lsq' from Junos OS release 10.0 does not show any output
  • How to configure MLPPP

Cause:

Solution:

A MLPPP bundle involves "bundling" multiple T1 interfaces into a single, logical interface that only uses one IP address.  For an example MLPPP bundle configuration, refer to the following, depending on the Junos version.  

Junos OS 10.0 and above
-------------------------------

Important note:  In Junos OS 10.0, the interface used for Multilink functionality has been moved from the ls-0/0/0 interface to the lsq-0/0/0 interface.    MLPPP will not come up if it is configured using the ls-0/0/0 interface.  Refer to the Junos OS 10.0 Release Notes for this change in behavior:  http://www.juniper.net/techpubs/en_US/junos10.0/information-products/topic-collections/release-notes/10/junos-release-notes-10.0.pdf.

To upgrade from ls-0/0/0 to lsq-0/0/0 (or to reverse the change) for multilink services refer Example: Upgrading from ls-0/0/0 to lsq-0/0/0 for Multilink Services.

The actual IP address is configured on an LSQ interface with the encapsulation set to multilink-ppp. The physical T1 interfaces simply need to be configured as a member of family mlppp and the LSQ interface it is a member of.

If your MLPPP configuration stopped working after upgrading to Junos 10.0 or greater, then 'replace pattern ls- with lsq-' from the top of the configuration hierarchy and commit your configuration.

The example below illustrates the configuration involved to bundle two T1 interfaces into a single bundle:
interfaces {
    lsq-0/0/0 {
        unit 0 {
            encapsulation multilink-ppp;
            family inet {
                address 10.1.1.1/30;
            }
        }
    }
    t1-1/0/0 {
        unit 0 {
            family mlppp {
                bundle lsq-0/0/0.0;
            }
        }
    }
    t1-1/0/1 {
        unit 0 {
            family mlppp {
                bundle lsq-0/0/0.0;
            }
        }
    }
}

Junos 9.6 and below

The actual IP address is configured on an LS interface with the encapsulation set to multilink-ppp. The physical T1 interfaces simply need to be configured as a member of family mlppp and the LS interface it is a member of.
