Synopsis

PROBLEM: RASSTATUS_GENERAL_FAILURE error occurs whiling using Remote Dialup VPN with NS Remote

Problem

Environment:

  • RAS Dialup VPN
  • Virtural Adapter
  • PPP
  • SLIP
Symptoms & Errors:
  • NS Remote log indicated the Phase 1 VPN negotitation is terminated by err=RASSTATUS_GENERAL_FAILURE
  • Unable to complete RAS VPN Connection
  • Unable to create virtual Adapter

Solution

The NS Remote log shown below indicates that:

  1. The Remote Dialup VPN session had attempted to establish RAS VPN with xAuth enabled.
  2. Upon receiving the assigned Private IP address and binding the Virtual adapter, the NS Remote reported an error with RASSTATUS_GENERAL_FAILURE.
  3. This error was cause by incorrect Virtual Adapter Networking type setup.  The VA was setup for SLIP connection instead of PPP.  Changing the "SafeNet Virtual Adapter Interface Properties" to use PPP: Windows 95/98/NT/2000, Internet" (as shown on below screenshot) will resolve the RAS Failure.
