Certain ICMPv6 Multicast Listener (MLDv2) Report Messages can cause the routing process to terminate unexpectedly.

Article ID: JSA10430 SECURITY_ADVISORIES Last Updated: 09 May 2013Version: 1.0
Legacy Advisory Id:
Product Affected:
This issue affects all JUNOS devices running version 9.3 and higher.
RPD has been found to core during security/resiliency testing of ICMPv6 Multicast Listener (MLDv2) Report Message (RFC 3810) using the Codenomicon test suite. This issue requires IPv6 and the MLDv2 to be configured. It is a unique condition which has yet to find a executable attack vector, but required to be fixed and reported based on Juniper use of CVSS.
All JUNOS software releases built on or after 2009-02-09 have fixed this specific issue. This specifically includes 9.3R3, 9.6R1, 10.0R1, 10.1R1 and all subsequent releases. Support for Multicast Listener (MLDv2) Report Message RFC 3810 was added in JUNOS 9.3, hence EEOL code in 8.5 and 9.1 are not vulnerable.

This issue is being tracked as PR 420845. While this PR is not viewable by customers, it can be used as a reference when discussing the issue with JTAC.

How to obtain Service Releases:

Security vulnerabilities are fixed in the next available Maintenance Release of each supported JUNOS version. In some cases, a Maintenance Release is not planned to be available in an appropriate time-frame. For these cases, Service Releases are made available in order to be more timely. Security Advisory notices will indicate which Maintenance and/or Service Releases contain fixes for the issues described. Upon request to JTAC, customers will be provided download instructions for a Service Release. Although Juniper does not provide formal Release Note documentation for a Service Release, a list of "PRs fixed" can be provided on request.
CVSS Score:
