Article ID: JSA10850 SECURITY_ADVISORIES Last Updated: 11 Apr 2018Version: 1.0
Product Affected:
This issue affects NorthStar Controller 3.0, 3.2.
Problem:

On December 12, 2017, a research paper entitled, "Return of Bleichenbacher's Oracle Threat" (ROBOT) was published. Researchers discovered that by using slight variations of an earlier vulnerability discovered by Daniel Bleichenbacher that allows performing RSA decryption and signing operations with the private key of a TLS server, some current implementations of SSL may still be vulnerable.

Internal analysis found that NorthStar uses a version of the Erlang programming language which is known to be vulnerable to ROBOT.

Affected releases are Juniper Networks NorthStar Controller:

  • 3.0 versions prior to 3.0.1;
  • 3.2 versions prior to 3.2.1.

Juniper SIRT is not aware of any malicious exploitation of this vulnerability.

This issue was discovered during an external security research.

This issue has been assigned CVE-2017-1000385.

Solution:

Erlang has been updated to version 18.3.4.7 which resolves this issue.

The following software releases have been updated to resolve this vulnerability: NorthStar 3.0.1, 3.2.1, 4.0.0, and all subsequent releases.

This issue is being tracked as 1329222 which is visible on the Customer Support website.

Note: Juniper SIRT's policy is not to evaluate releases which are beyond End of Engineering (EOE) or End of Life (EOL).

Workaround:

Disable use of TLS ciphers that rely on RSA for key exchange.

Implementation:
Software Releases, patches and updates are available at https://www.juniper.net/support/downloads/.
