This issue affects all products and platforms running Junos OS
Problem:

Multiple vulnerabilities have been resolved in Junos OS by updating third party software included with Junos OS or by fixing vulnerabilities found during internal testing.

These issues potentially affect Juniper Networks Junos OS:

  • 12.3X48 versions prior to 12.3X48-D55;
  • 12.3 versions prior to 12.3R12-S13;
  • 15.1X49 versions prior to 15.1X49-D100;
  • 15.1 versions prior to 15.1F6-S12, 15.1R5-S4, 15.1R6-S1, 15.1R7;
  • 16.1 versions prior to 16.1R3-S4, 16.1R4-S3, 16.1R5;
  • 16.2 versions prior to 16.2R1-S4, 16.2R2;
  • 17.1 versions prior to 17.1R1-S2, 17.1R2;
  • 17.2 versions prior to 17.2R1.


Juniper SIRT is not aware of any malicious exploitation of these vulnerabilities.

These issues were discovered during external security research.

CVE-2015-8325 7.8 (CVSS:3.0/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) The do_setup_env function in session.c in sshd in OpenSSH through 7.2p2, when the UseLogin feature is enabled and PAM is configured to read .pam_environment files in user home directories, allows local users to gain privileges by triggering a crafted environment for the /bin/login program, as demonstrated by an LD_PRELOAD environment variable.
CVE-2016-6210 5.9 (CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N) sshd in OpenSSH before 7.3, when SHA256 or SHA512 are used for user password hashing, uses BLOWFISH hashing on a static password when the username does not exist, which allows remote attackers to enumerate users by leveraging the timing difference between responses when a large password is provided.
CVE-2016-6515 7.5 (CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) The auth_password function in auth-passwd.c in sshd in OpenSSH before 7.3 does not limit password lengths for password authentication, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crypt CPU consumption) via a long string.
CVE-2015-6564 4.8 (CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N) Use-after-free vulnerability in the mm_answer_pam_free_ctx function in monitor.c in sshd in OpenSSH before 7.0 on non-OpenBSD platforms might allow local users to gain privileges by leveraging control of the sshd uid to send an unexpectedly early MONITOR_REQ_PAM_FREE_CTX request.
CVE-2016-10009 7.3 (CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:L) Untrusted search path vulnerability in ssh-agent.c in ssh-agent in OpenSSH before 7.4 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary local PKCS#11 modules by leveraging control over a forwarded agent-socket.
CVE-2016-10010 7.0 (CVSS:3.0/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) sshd in OpenSSH before 7.4, when privilege separation is not used, creates forwarded Unix-domain sockets as root, which might allow local users to gain privileges via unspecified vectors, related to serverloop.c.
CVE-2016-10011 5.5 (CVSS:3.0/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N) authfile.c in sshd in OpenSSH before 7.4 does not properly consider the effects of realloc on buffer contents, which might allow local users to obtain sensitive private-key information by leveraging access to a privilege-separated child process.
CVE-2016-10012 7.8 (CVSS:3.0/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) The shared memory manager (associated with pre-authentication compression) in sshd in OpenSSH before 7.4 does not ensure that a bounds check is enforced by all compilers, which might allows local users to gain privileges by leveraging access to a sandboxed privilege-separation process, related to the m_zback and m_zlib data structures.

 

Solution:

The following software releases have been updated to resolve this specific issue: 12.3X48-D55, 12.3R12-S13, 15.1X49-D100, 15.1F6-S12, 15.1R5-S4, 15.1R6-S1, 15.1R7, 16.1R3-S4, 16.1R4-S3, 16.1R5, 16.2R1-S4, 16.2R2, 17.1R1-S2, 17.1R2, 17.2R1 and all subsequent releases.

Note: Juniper SIRT's policy is not to evaluate releases which are beyond End of Engineering (EOE) or End of Life (EOL).

These issues are being tracked as PR 1208815 which are visible on the Customer Support website.
 

Workaround:

There are no viable workarounds for these issues.

To reduce the risk of exploitation of these issues use access lists or firewall filters to limit access to the device(s) to only trusted administrative networks, hosts and users.
