Article ID: JSA11177 SECURITY_ADVISORIES Last Updated: 14 Jul 2021Version: 3.0
Product Affected:
This issue affects Junos OS 15.1, 17.3.
Problem:

An Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory ('Path Traversal') vulnerability, where named paths are globally scoped, meaning a process located in one jail can read and modify the content of POSIX shared memory objects created by a process in another jail or the host system of Juniper Networks Junos OS. As a result, a malicious user that has access to a jailed system is able to abuse shared memory by injecting malicious content in the shared memory region. This memory region might be executed by applications trusting the shared memory. This issue could lead to a Denial of Service (DoS) or local privilege escalation.

This issue affects:

Juniper Networks Junos OS

  • 15.1 versions prior to 15.1R7-S9;
  • 17.3 versions prior to 17.3R3-S11.

This issue does not affect SRX Series.

Juniper SIRT is not aware of any malicious exploitation of this vulnerability.

This issue was discovered during external security research.

This issue has been assigned CVE-2017-1087.

Solution:

The following software releases have been updated to resolve this specific issue: Junos OS 15.1R7-S9, 17.3R3-S11 and all subsequent releases.

This issue is being tracked as 1325911.

Workaround:

There are no viable workarounds for this issue.

To reduce the risk of malicious exploitation, use access lists or firewall filters to limit CLI access to the device only from trusted, administrative networks or hosts. Additionally, limit access to the Junos OS shell to only trusted system administrators.

Implementation:
Software releases or updates are available for download at https://support.juniper.net/support/downloads/
