How to "factory reset" your radius database

Summary:

The portion of Steel-Belted Radius configuration that is done in the SBR Web GUI is stored in a set of files referred to as the "radius database" [not to be confused with the "sessions database" or Session State Register (SSR)/ SBR Cluster]. At some point, an admin might want to dump the contents of the radius database and start over. 

This article explains how to do so.

Solution:

Note: Restoring an empty radius database also removes all administrator and replication settings, leaving no administrator access and turning the server into a standalone server (as opposed to a primary or replica). Additional steps are needed to restore administrator access (initial_admin_account.dat) and replication must be reconfigured (sbrsetuptool).

The radius database files are found in the radius private directory, typically /opt/JNPRsbr/radius/radiusdata.

  1. Close the SBR Web GUI and stop the SBR process (./sbrd stop).

  2. Delete / rename / or back up the existing database files: radiusdata.d01, radiusdata.d02, radiusdata.d03, radiusdata.dbd, radiusdata.k01, radiusdata.k02, radiusdata.dbd.xml, and /opt/JNPRsbr/radius/vista.taf.

  3. Extract the contents of /opt/JNPRsbr/radius/emptydb.tar.  

  4. Create an initial_admin_account.dat file containing the OS account name for the initial admin user. (Use KB18191 for additional instructions on creating this .dat file).

  5. Start the SBR process (./sbrd start) (initial_admin_account.dat will be deleted when the initial admin account is configured).
