[SSG] Temperature display is not correct among CPU, System and IO temperature

Article ID: KB10510 KB Last Updated: 11 Aug 2010Version: 3.0
Summary:
SSG-320M shows high IO Temperature on the "get chassis" output, and IO fans keep rotating as full speed.
Symptoms:
SSG-320M and SSG-350M displays the temperatures incorrectly among CPU, System (memory) and IO temperature. And also even there is no PIM on IO slots, the IO fan temperature keep increasing.

Example 1 - ScreenOS 6.0r1~6.0r3

  SSG320-> get chassis
  Chassis Environment:
   I/O fan1 Status: Good
   I/O fan2 Status: Good
   Memory fan Status: Good
   CPU fan1 Status: Good
   CPU fan2 Status: Good
    CPU Temperature: 113'F ( 45'C)    <---- It's internal system temperature
    System Temperature:  98'F ( 37'C) <---- It's System(memory) temperature
    IO Temperature: 141'F ( 61'C)     <---- It's CPU temperature

Solution:
The root cause is that the ScreenOS 6.0r3 or below has temperature mapping issues, so it displays the temperatures incorrectly. The mapping issue will be fixed on ScreenOS 6.0r5 or above.

Example 2 - ScreenOS 6.0r5 or above

  SSG320-> get chassis
  Chassis Environment:
   I/O fan1 Status: Good
   I/O fan2 Status: Good
   Memory fan Status: Good
   CPU fan1 Status: Good
   CPU fan2 Status: Good
    CPU Temperature: 141'F ( 61'C)    <---- it use CPU temperature
    System Temperature:  98'F ( 37'C) <---- it use System(memory) temperature

Note that IO Temperature field will be removed because it read the internal temperature itself, so even there is no PIM on IO slots, this temperature keep increasing by internal system temperature. So Juniper has removed this field to avoid misreading.
