Wireless 802.1X authentication fails when using username domain name

Article ID: KB10958 KB Last Updated: 24 Feb 2020Version: 4.0
Summary:
Windows wireless client is configured for 802.1x using PEAP, with MD5 challenge, and the client is not authenticating.
Solution:
If the domain is configured in the auth-server configuration on the firewall, the 802.1x wireless authentication will fail.  This is a misconfiguration.  The domain field is used for the "Domain Name Stripping" feature.  For more information on this, please refer to KB7837.

The resolution is to remove the domain name configuration in the auth-server configuration in the firewall.

Example:
set auth-server "Local" id 0
set auth-server "Local" server-name "Local"
set auth-server "8021X" id 1
set auth-server "8021X" server-name "172.19.50.129"
set auth-server "8021X" account-type auth 802.1X
set auth-server "8021X" username domain "TACDOMAIN"
set auth-server "8021X" radius secret "$ABC123"
set auth-server "8021X" radius attribute calling-station-id
Remove the domain "TACDOMAIN" from the configuration, and the 802.1x authentication will succeed.
set auth-server "Local" id 0
set auth-server "Local" server-name "Local"
set auth-server "8021X" id 1
set auth-server "8021X" server-name "172.19.50.129"
set auth-server "8021X" account-type auth 802.1X
set auth-server "8021X" radius secret "$ABC123"
set auth-server "8021X" radius attribute calling-station-id
