Multicast stream started but not seeing an entry in PIM JOIN database on source DR.

Summary:

After starting a multicast application,  no {* , G} entry is found in the PIM JOIN database nor is there an IGMP entry for the group in-question.  Is this an application issue?

Symptoms:

It is common practice for developers to design multicast applications without taking into consideration that these packets will be routed. As a result, the Time To Live (TTL) value in the packets are set to 1.

The JUNOS Routing Engine will decrement the TTL and thus reject these packets with a TTL expired message.

Solution:

To workaound the issue, increase the TTL in the generated packets.
