[NSM] Upgrading NSMXpress to a new major NSM release without Internet

This article details the steps to upgrade the NSMXpress appliance to a new, major NSM version if the NSMXpress appliance is not connected to the Internet.



Cannot upgrade NSMXpress OS version because no Internet connection is available



To upgrade the NSMXpress appliance to a new, major NSM version when the NSMXpress appliance is not connected to the Internet, perform the following steps:

  1. On the Juniper Support page, enter Network and Security Manager (NSM) in the Find a Product field and click Download Software.
  2. Select the version that you require (for example, 2012.2) and navigate to the desired version/build header. For example, if you are looking to upgrade to 2012.2R13a, select 2012.2 as the version and select 2012.2R13a on the corresponding page.

  3. Download the "Linux server" (nsm<version>” file.

  4. Check the CentOS version on the appliance by running the uname -a command and depending on the CentOS version, navigate to the header “Tools for CentOS <version>”. 

  5. Download the “NSM Appliance Generic Offline Upgrade Package_v4 – CentOS <version>” file.

  6. FTP or SCP the files onto your NSMXpress appliance. Download both files to the same location (/home/admin or /var/cores).

  7. Log in as the admin user and answer "n" when prompted to run the setup wizard. Enter the following command, and then enter the admin password to gain root access.

# sudo su -
  1. Confirm that the unzip utility is present on the appliance by executing the following command:

# which unzip

This gives you the location of the file if it is available.
  1. Navigate to the directory where you saved the management system installer file, which is typically the /home/admin or /var/cores sub-directory.

  2. Execute the following command to unzip the offline upgrade installation file.

# unzip nsm_generic_offline_upgrade_v4_CentOS<version>.zip

This will extract one sh file ( and two directories in which the related binaries for the newer version are present (apps-rpms and i386).
  1. Execute the following command to unzip the NSM version installer file.

# unzip nsm<version>

This will extract the NSM version installer (nsm<version> file.
  1. Run the following command to automatically start the installation.

# sh nsm<version> Offline

The NSMXpress OS will be upgraded automatically first, followed by running of the NSM installer in order to upgrade the NSM version.
