How do I clear a BGP session in ScreenOS?

How to perform both a hard and soft reset of a BGP session in ScreenOS.

  • Changes to BGP route map or access-list need to be applied
  • Peer is not being updated with new routes

Whenever a change is made in BGP, whether it be a route map change, access-list, community list, etc., the BGP session needs to be reset in order for the config change to take effect. 

In ScreenOS release 5.3 and later, this can be done via a 'soft reset'.  In a 'soft reset', a refresh is performed and the BGP TCP connection remains established.  See below for an example on how to perform a BGP soft reset:

clear vrouter <vrouter> protocol bgp neighbor <neighbor IP> soft-in/soft-out

Note:  The 'soft-in' option means you're accepting changes in-bound from the peer device.  The 'soft-out' option means you're applying changes out-bound to the peer device.


Prior to ScreenOS release 5.3, any changes would only take affect after a hard reset.    With a 'hard reset', the BGP TCP connection is broken and then reestablished.  There are two ways to perform a hard reset in ScreenOS.  See below for examples:

unset/set vrouter <vrouter> protocol bgp neighbor <neighbor IP> enable


exec vrouter <vrouter> protocol bgp neighbor <neighbor IP> disconnect/connect
