[EX] How to configure a LAG on the EX-series Switch for attached devices that cannot support LACP

Article ID: KB12262 KB Last Updated: 18 Jan 2017Version: 3.0
Summary:
This article shows how devices that do not support LACP (Link Aggregation Control Protocol) will require that LACP not be used on the EX Switch.

Symptoms:
My firewall or server cannot do LACP so how do I configure it with the EX-series Switch?

Cause:

Solution:
You configure a LAG by specifying the link number as a physical device and then associating a set of ports with the link. All the ports must have the same speed and be in full-duplex mode. JUNOS software for EX-series switches assigns a unique ID and port priority to each port. The ID and priority are not configurable. LAG must be configured on both sides of the link along with same settings.

With LACP configured on the LAG do the following:

root@user# delete interface aeX aggregated-ether-options lacp

The above command will configure a hardcoded LAG interface that doesn't exchange LACP frames with the partner. The disadvantages of not using LACP are obvious, but it will help in situations where the EX Switch partner device does not support LACP protocol, or the partner violates the standards based LACP.
