Article ID: KB12353 KB Last Updated: 22 Jun 2010Version: 2.0
Summary:

There are many options for installing the Windows Adaptive Log Exporter (ALE) Plugins.  Described below is how to install the plugins via the default web method; installing via an SMB host and via local files.

Symptoms:

The Adaptive Log Exporter, ALE, installs on a Windows XP or 2003 host and allows forwarding of log events to an STRM Server.  Without the plugins, ALE will not be able to forward any Windows Events to STRM.

Installing the plugins for ALE requires setup of the ALE Application. This article will describe 3 methods of installing the plugins.

Solution:

In order for ALE to function as a log forwarder, the plugins must be installed.

Default HTTP Method (Internet access)

To be used when the Windows Host can reach the Internet for downloading of Plugins.

  1. Open ALE by double clicking the Application Icon

    Icon for ALE Application
  2. Go to the File menu and chose "Preferences"
  3. In the new Preferences window, expand the Install/Update section by clicking on the "+"
  4. Click on Update Site
  5. In the Update Site URL field on the right, type: http://downloads.q1labs.com/windowsagent

    Default Web Download
  6. Click OK
  7. Click on the "Add Plugins..." button near the menu bar

Download from Q1Labs (no Internet access)

The next 2 methods require that the Plugins be downloaded from the Q1Labs site to a local machine or local server for installation.
These methods are generally used when the host on which you are installing ALE cannot reach the Internet itself.

  1. Use a Web Browser to navigate to the site: http://downloads.q1labs.com/windowsagent

    downloadPlugins
  2. Download the file windowsagent.zip or windowsagent.tar.gz.
  3. Store the file either on a Windows server accessible to the host on which you are installing ALE or move the file directly to that host.
  4. Expand the file using the proper application.  Open ALE by double clicking the Application Icon as shown above.
  5. Go to the File menu and chose "Preferences"
  6. In the new Preferences window, expand the Install/Update section by clicking on the "+"
  7. Click on Update Site
  8. In the Update Site URL field on the right, type: \\servername\sharename\<location/of/file/on/server>

    Windows Server

To use the local file method, follow the 7 steps as in the previous example.  Then for step 8, in the Update Site URL field on the right, type: file:///c:/<location of expanded files on the local machine>

Local Files
