In NetScreen Remote 9.0r2, the client is NOT able to reach/PING its assigned IP Address

Article ID: KB12370 KB Last Updated: 10 Jun 2010Version: 3.0
After upgrading to NS Remote 9.0r3, the client can't ping its assigned IP address.  A work-around is provided.
After upgrading from NS Remote 9.0r1 to 9.0r3, a Windows XP machine could NOT get a response from Self-PING to its assigned IP address. This affected an application accessing a particular port of the machine with the assigned IP address as the destination IP address.
In NS Remote 9.0r2, there was a change to support Virtual Adapter for both Vista and Windows XP.  The change resulted in two routing entries to the assigned IP address. While on the previous version, there is only one routing entry. (See below.)
  • NS Remote 9.0r2 and above:
Network Destination        Netmask          Gateway     Interface  Metric    50     1

  • NS Remote 9.0r1 and below:
Network Destination        Netmask          Gateway    Interface  Metric    50

To correct this issue, there are two alternatives:
  1. Modify the application to access the loopback IP address,, instead of the assigned IP address.  For example,  ping

  2. Downgrade to 9.0r1.   Note:  Be aware of another issue on Vista, addressed in KB10233
