Summary:
Using a Modem for J-Series, SRX console for out-of-band management.
Symptoms:
• Configure a US Robotics Sportster modem to the console port
• Remote dial up access to the J-Series, SRX console
• Obtain console message via out of band connection using dial up modem
 
Solution:
The Console port of J-Series and SRX routers is a RJ-45 serial console port connector, for VT100 terminal emulator programs to perform local configuration and administration. Use a RJ45-DB25 cable between the router and US Robotics Sportster modem.
  1. Connect the router console to the modem with a RJ45-DB25 cable. The following cable pinout was used to connect successfully with the console port on a router to a US Robotics Sportster 56K modem.

  2. Set the DIP switches on the USR like the following:

    1 - DTR normal (down)
    2 - Verbal result codes (up)
    3 - Suppress result codes (up)
    4 - No echo, offline commands (down)
    5 - Auto answer on (up)
    6 - Carrier detect override (up)
    7 - Load NVRAM defaults (up)
    8 - Dumb mode (up)
    
  3. Set the following AT commands on the modem console:

    at&U6 (minimum link rate-9600 bps)
    at&N6 (set the maximum speed to 9600bps, the Router can only talk 9600bps)
    at&W0 (store configuration 0) 

    For other brands of modems, please consult the vendor for more information on customizing the modem to communicate at 9600 bps, 8 bit, no parity, 1 stop bit.
