How to use SNMP on the Backup device in NSRP

Article ID: KB12544 KB Last Updated: 09 Jan 2009Version: 1.0
How can I get SNMP to work on the backup device in an NSRP cluster if all the interfaces are inactive?
Many times users want to monitor the status of their firewalls using SNMP. Sometimes those users can run into problems when they are using two firewalls that are clustered together (specifically in Active/Passive), and they want to monitor the status of both devices using SNMP. The reason is that the backup device’s interfaces are all inactive, and can therefore not be used to send traffic.
The solution is to use the manage-ip address which you can configure on any interface.  Each interface in use is assigned an IP address.  You can also assign a manage-ip address on that interface which is in the same subnet as the physical interface, but a different ip address.  You can then use the manage-ip address to manage the firewall, and also use it for SNMP.

For more information on the Manage IP address, consult: KB4059 - Configuring a Manage IP Address on Juniper firewall
For more information on troubleshooting, consult: KB11363 - Cannot manage (Telnet, SSH, WebUI, SSL, HTTP, HTTPS, SNMP) my firewall running NSRP
