How to connect to or access files on individual members on a EX-series Switch Virtual Chassis

Article ID: KB12690 KB Last Updated: 04 Jan 2010Version: 1.0
This article explains how to access or copy files from individual members in a Virtual Chassis (VC).

How do I access files on another member (fpc) in a Virtual Chassis (VC) that is not the master in a VC, such as a linecard or backup RE?
There are 2 ways to access or reference files on a member (fpc) of a Virtual Chassis (VC).  This is very useful when collecting files from the /var/log (or other directories) on individual members in a Virtual Chassis (VC).
  1. To connect to a member (fpc) in a Virtual Chassis (VC) do the following: request session <fpc-number> logs into the member (fpc) defined and you can access or reference files on the member (fpc).
  1. To copy or access files on another member (fpc) from the master member (fpc) use the fpc<n>:/path/file syntax where <n> is the fpc number.

file list fpc3:/var/log/messages (will list contents of messages file on fpc3 flash)

file copy fpc3:/var/log/messages /var/log/fpc3-messages (will copy the same file into the flash directory /var/log as filename fpc3-messages on the master switch).

After requesting session to a member all files in the directory can be compressed into a single file using the shell command :

tar -cvzf /var/fpc3-logs.tgz /var/log/*

Then we can copy this compressed tgz file into the master fpc.

file copy fpc3:/var/fpc3-logs.tgz /var/log

The files can then be easily extracted from JWEB maintenance window or using ftp from shell.
