How do I synchronize "commit" on both routing Engines in EX Virtual Chassis by default?

Article ID: KB12879 KB Last Updated: 27 Apr 2009Version: 1.0
This article describes how to configure "commit synchronize" on the EX-series Switch for a Virtual Chassis (VC).  This is useful to ensure that all members in a Virtual Chassis (VC) are properly synchronized.

A multi member Virtual Chassis (VC) configuration has two Routing Engines, one in the primary and the other in the backup. Therefore, we recommend that you always use "commit synchronize" rather than simply commit to save configuration changes made for a Virtual Chassis (VC). This ensures that the configuration changes are saved in both Routing Engines.

In virtual chassis (VC) environment, commiting the configuration by "commit" command only commits the confiuration on the Primary.  To synchronize the confiuration on all other members of VC, "commit synchronize" command needs to be executed each time.  This default behavior can be changed by adding "set system commit synchronize" to the existing configuration.

The following configuraion allows you to set the commit synchronize process by default.  This allows you to do a "commit" command and by default it will synchronize the confguration on all members.

root@ex-switch> configure
Entering configuration mode
root@ex-switch# set system commit synchronize
root@ex-switch# commit synchronize
configuration check succeeds
commit complete
commit complete

This command eliminates the requirement of executing "commit synchronize" command for a configuration change.
