Can STRM parse messages from unsupported devices?

Article ID: KB13175 KB Last Updated: 04 Nov 2010Version: 1.0
STRM can take SYSLOG and SNMP messages from a variety of device types.

STRM can take SYSLOG and SNMP messages from a variety of device types.    A list of supported devices is available in the DSM Book.

A DSM is a Device Support Module. DSMs tell STRM how to parse the messages received from external devices.  The DSMs Book is available as a PDF download from the Security Threat Response Manager Documentation site.   Download and view the "Configuring DSMs" PDF file from the page.

Unfortunately, not all network devices are supported.  In other words, not all network devices capable of sending messages to STRM have DSMs built.  If a device does not have a DSM, the events received will be "Unknown Generic Event" and may be missing data.

In order to work with devices that are not currently supported by a DSM, a Device Extension must be created in STRM.  Consult the "Using Extensions" user guide, Section 2 "Creating a Device Extension", for creating Device Extensions; the guide is available on the STRM documentation site.

NOTE:  The creation and management of Device Extensions is outside the scope of JTAC support.
