Article ID: KB14176 KB Last Updated: 20 May 2009Version: 1.0
Summary:
What are the steps for upgrading the memory on an SSG5 or SSG20?
Symptoms:
There are 2 models for the SSG5, as can be seen from the datasheet SSG5 and SSG20 Datasheets  (Ref to Page 10)

The SSG5 comes with 2 different memory modules:
SSG-5-SB : with 128 MB Memory, RS232 Serial backup interface
OR
SSG-5-SH: with 256 MB Memory, RS232 Serial backup interface

The part number for the memory upgrade is listed under Accessories & Upgrades:
SSG-5-20-MEM-256 - SSG5 and SSG20 256 MB Memory Upgrade Module

Looking at the SSG5, there is no obvious memory slot available for upgrading the memory from 128MB to 256MB. How can this be done?

Solution:
The Hardware Installation and Configuration Guide explains in detail how to upgrade the memory.  Hardware Installation and Configuration Guide for the SSG5 (Refer to Page 43).

For easy reference, an excerpt of the guide is as follows:

To upgrade the SSG 5 or SSG 20 device from 128 MB to 256 MB of memory:
  1. Attach an ESD grounding strap to your bare wrist and connect the strap to the ESD point on the chassis or to an outside ESD point if the device is disconnected from earth ground.
  2. Unplug the AC cord from the power outlet.
  3. Turn over the device so that its top is lying on a flat surface.
  4. Use a phillips screwdriver to remove the screws from the memory-card cover. Keep the screws nearby for use when securing the cover later.
  5. Remove the memory-card cover.

  6. Release the 128 MB DIMM DRAM by pressing your thumbs outward on the locking tabs on each side of the module so that the tabs move away from the module.

  7. Grip the long edge of the memory module and slide it out. Set it aside.

  8. Insert the 256 MB DIMM DRAM into the slot. Exerting even pressure with both thumbs upon the upper edge of the module, press the module downward until the locking tabs click into position.

  9. Place the memory-card cover over the slot.
  10. Use the phillips screwdriver to tighten the screws, securing the cover to the device.

*Please note the steps mentioned above will apply for both the SSG5 and SSG20.
