EX Switches: NTP, SNMP & Name Services under routing instances

Article ID: KB15173 KB Last Updated: 16 Oct 2013Version: 3.0
This document provides a brief explanation of system services such as NTP, SNMP and NAME SERVICES (DNS) under routing instances for the EX Switches.
NTP, SNMP and NAME services does not work under routing instance.
The EX Switch is capable of acting as a client to some of the services such as NTP (Network Time Protocol), SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) and DNS (Domain Name Service). The EX Switch can be configured to fetch system time from NTP servers connected in the network. It is also possible to configure the EX Switch to act as an SNMP agent to send traps to an SNMP server connected in the network and/or send DNS queries to a domain name server (DNS).

The following are sample configurations for services on the EX Switch:

#set system ntp server

#set snmp community public
#set snmp trap-group test categories link
#set snmp trap-group test targets

Name Services (DNS)

#set system name-server

All the system services configured above, by default will use IP interfaces configured (or available) under default routing instance (inet.0) including ME0 or VME interface to communicate with respective servers in the network. If there are no interfaces available under default routing instance, all services configured above will fail. Interfaces available under any other routing instances (virtual router) can not be used to communicate with any of the servers configured above.
