Article ID: KB15499 KB Last Updated: 27 Feb 2013Version: 2.0
Summary:
This article provides information on how to modify the behavior of the firewall response for the ipForwarding SNMP OID on ScreenOS devices.
Symptoms:
How to modify the behavior of the firewall response for the ipForwarding SNMP OID on ScreenOS devices.
Cause:
ipForwarding is a Generic OID. When an SNMP agent receives a query for this OID from an SNMP server, it may return one of the following values:

  • forwarding(1) -- acting as a gateway: Normally, non-endpoint devices, such as routers, firewalls, and so on, return this value.

  • not-forwarding(2) -- NOT acting as a gateway: Endpoints, such as client machines, servers, and so on, return this value.

ScreenOS 6.2 or earlier has ipForwarding set to not-forwarding(2), NOT acting as a gateway. So, the firewall returns a value of 2, when queried for ipForwarding
snmpwalk -v1 -c Test 10.204.8.25 1.3.6.1.2.1.4.1
IP-MIB::ipForwarding.0 = INTEGER: notForwarding(2)
Solution:
From ScreenOS 6.3, this behavior can be modified via the CLI:
set snmp rfc1213 ipforwarding enable
When enabled, the firewall will return a value of 1 (forwarding), when queried for this OID.
snmpwalk -v1 -c Test 10.204.8.25 1.3.6.1.2.1.4.1
IP-MIB::ipForwarding.0 = INTEGER: forwarding(1)
Note: '1.3.6.1.2.1.4.1' is the OID for 'MIB::ipForwarding'.
