Article ID: KB17096 KB Last Updated: 03 Jan 2017Version: 3.0
Summary:
Configuring EX-switch to disable VRRP preempt.
Symptoms:
Configuring EX switch to disable VRRP preempt.
Solution:
Apply the below mentioned command to disable VRRP preemption on EX switches.

root@sw1# set interfaces vlan.10 family inet address 10.10.10.3/24 vrrp-group 10 virtual-address 10.10.10.1 priority 200 no-preempt accept-data

root@sw1# show interfaces vlan.10
family inet {
    address 10.10.10.1/24 {
       vrrp-group 10 {
          virtual-address 10.10.10.3;
          priority 200;
          no-preempt;
          accept-data;
        }
    }
}

Impact of disabling VRRP preemption :

> If you increase the priority of the Backup router, when the Master router is present, the VRRP backup router will NOT become the master router.

> If the VRRP preemption is disabled on VRRP Master router, and if the VRRP Master is rebooted, the VRRP backup router becomes VRRP Master router. When the old VRRP Master router comes back, it will NOT become VRRP Master (even though it has higher priority as compared to the new VRRP Master Router) and will remain VRRP backup router.
