[EX] How to configure custom display message upon a reboot

Summary:

This article explains how to configure the second line of the EX LCD to display a custom message, such as an IP address, even after a reboot.

Symptoms:
The customized message is usually not shown in display upon a reboot.

 
Solution:
Perform the following steps:
 
1. Add the following line to the end of  /etc/rc.custom :

        sh /root/setlcd.sh &

 Note:
     A: Do not forget to add the last "&" 
     B: In case of get permission failure on modifying this rc.custom file, please first execute the following command from root shell.
         % ​mount -u -o rw,noatime /​
     C: After modifying the rc.custom,  execute the following command to change back the privilege of "/" file system.
         % ​mount -u -o ro,noatime / ​
     D: If /etc/rc.custom file does not exist, create it.​

2. Create shell file named setlcd.sh under /root:

% cat /root/setlcd.sh

#!/bin/sh
#
# You can tune the wait_time minutes
wait_time=3

while [ true ]
do
up_time=`uptime | awk '{print $3}'`
if [ $up_time -ge $wait_time ] ; then
break
fi
sleep 1
done

cli set chassis display fpc-slot 0 permanent message "Custom Message"

          
#EOF​​

3. Restart system to confirm.
