[NSM] How to set a multi-line login banner for SRX (Junos) devices

Article ID: KB17580 KB Last Updated: 25 Jun 2010Version: 1.0

In Junos, it is possible to have a multi-line login banner set?
Setting this option in NSM is somewhat confusing.

This article will show how to set a multi-line login banner.

Setting a multi-line login banner is difficult given the single line entry field in NSM.

For Junos devices, the login banner is managed in NSM by editing the device and navigating to: System -> Login

The Message field on the right is where the banner message has to go:

The field can accept multi-line input if you format the text as follows:

  • Start the text with a double quote: ".
  • Include whatever characters you want on the first line.
  • When you reach the point where you want a line break, type "\n" without the quotes.
  • You can use multiple spaces within the text and other escaped characters.
  • To get a tab character, type "\t" without the quotes.
  • To get a double quote character inside the text, you must escape it like this: \"
Below is a sample multi-line login banner:

"This device is property of XYZ Company and as such:\n*Logins are restricted to authorized users\n*Your actions may be monitored and recorded\n*There is no expectation of privacy while connected to this system."

The above line would display as follows when someone logged into the device on which it was configured:

This device is property of XYZ Company and as such:
*Logins are restricted to authorized users
*Your actions may be monitored and recorded
*There is no expectation of privacy while connected to this system.
