[Junos] How to check MD5 checksum on a Junos installation package

Article ID: KB17665 KB Last Updated: 26 May 2021Version: 3.0

Juniper provides an MD5 hash of Junos installation packages on its website. This article explains how we can confirm that a Junos installation package downloaded from the Juniper Networks website is not modified in any way.

The Juniper Networks Support Downloads page provides a link to Junos installation packages for different products. One such example is for Junos OS Release 18.1R2-S4 as follows:

  1. As an example, download the QFX Series Install Package for Junos OS Release 18.1R2-S4 onto the router.
labroot@Router> file list /var/tmp
  1. Run the following CLI command to calculate the file checksum.
labroot@Router> file checksum md5 /var/tmp/jinstall-host-qfx-10-f-x86-64-18.1R2-S4.4-secure-signed.tgz
MD5 (/var/tmp/jinstall-host-qfx-10-f-x86-64-18.1R2-S4.4-secure-signed.tgz) = c422a158a8e6658f50d1965d0664d253
  1. Compare the above MD5 hash output with the MD5 hash provided on the Downloads page when the checksum is clicked.

  2. Similarly, you can also calculate the SHA1 and SHA-256 checksum of a file.

labroot@Router> file checksum ?
Possible completions:
  md5 Calculate MD5 checksum of a file
  sha-256 Calculate SHA-256 checksum of a file
  sha1 Calculate SHA1 checksum of a file
Modification History:
  • 2020-02-19: Updated links in Solution section and made other minor modifications

  • 2021-05-26: Updated the link in Related links and added Routing and Switching platforms
