[WX] How to accomplish the task of creating an application definition and excluding it from compression and acceleration on WX through CMS

  [KB18135] Show Article Properties

Summary:
There are often times when the need arises to perform a task which is applicable to all the WX devices in the community and a configuration needs to be created to address the problem and pushed to all WX devices of the community through CMS. This article describes a step-by-step procedure of creating an application definition and excluding it from compression and acceleration on WX through CMS.
Symptoms:
This particular article address the task of creating an application definition and excluding it from compression and acceleration on WX through CMS. The task can be modified for different needs, however, this example address the problem of eliminating the traffic from a specific pair of hosts to be compressed and accelerated as the traffic from these hosts seem to be causing tunnel instability.
Solution:
The steps to perform the following are given below:
  • Create a partial configuration to accomplish the task
  • Push the above created partial configuration onto the WXs
  • Verify the task is accomplished

Create a partial configuration to accomplish the task

  1. Go to Management > Configurations, select the task “Extract” from the drop down menu and click on “Go”. It takes you to the following page:

  2. Select the option “Extract partial configuration from WX device”, select the community name, and select “any” of the WXs in the community.

  3. Enter the configuration name. In this example, the configuration name is “FileServer”. Enter a description to help understand what this partial configuration accomplishes and click on “Submit”.

  4. It takes you to the Management --> Configurations page. The extracted partial configuration “FileServer” can be seen in this page. Click on the “FileServer” configuration. The following pop-up window will be displayed:

  5. Notice that by default all the options are checked under “Advanced Setup”. Go ahead and uncheck all the options except for “CLI”. By unchecking the check-boxes a pop-up window appears saying
  6. “This will erase any values you have entered for the associated page”. Click on “OK” for this pop-up window.

  7. Now click on CLI and delete any existing configuration and paste the relevant configuration which accomplishes the task.

  8. Below is the configuration as an example which accomplishes the task:

    # Config File Format Version: 2.2
config application add name "FileServer" type default
config application rule add name "FileServer" src-addr 20.20.20.1
config application rule add name "FileServer" dst-addr 30.30.30.1
    config mon-apps add "FileServer"
    config filter add application "FileServer"
config reduction network-sequence-mirroring application mode exclude
config reduction network-sequence-mirroring application add "FileServer"
config acceleration active-flow-pipelining application mode exclude
config acceleration active-flow-pipelining application add "FileServer"
config application modify precedence 10 name "FileServer"

The configuration can be pasted as shown in following screen shot:

  9. Hit “Submit” and click on “Show CLI” at the right hand top corner to verify the configuration. After verification save the configuration.

Push the above created partial configuration onto the WXs

  1. Now that the partial configuration is ready, the next step is to push this configuration onto the WXs in the community. Go to Management > Devices, select the community, and hit Submit.

  2. Select the endpoints on which the task needs to be accomplished. Select Configuration > Load under the drop down menu and click on Go which takes to the following page:

  3. Select the options that are highlighted in RED. The configuration push can scheduled as per needs. By doing a “Preview”, you can see what the configuration looks like after loading it. Once the preview looks good, you can click on “Submit”.

How to verify if the task is accomplished

  1. Log into one of the WXs WebUI and verify that a new application called “File Server” with precedence 10 has been created. Verify that the application is removed from Compression, NSC and AFP on the following screens:
