For the most verbose logging possible, set loglevel and tracelevel equal to 2 in the radius.ini file. Technical Support engineers will likely require verbose logging for troubleshooting purposes. Below are some details on loglevel and tracelevel which can also be found in the reference guide.

LogLevel

Sets the rate at which Steel-Belted Radius writes entries to the server log file (.LOG):
  • 0 – Production logging level
  • 1 – Informational logging level
  • 2 – Debug logging level
Default value is 0.
GEE/SPE: The LogLevel setting is re-read whenever the server receives a HUP signal.

TraceLevel
Specifies the RADIUS packet tracing level:
  • 0 – No packet tracing
  • 1 – Parsed content of packets is logged
  • 2 – Raw content and parsed content of the packet is logged
Default value is 0.
NOTE: Packet traces are written to the server log file and can be a useful tool for troubleshooting interoperability problems.

NOTE: On servers where there are multiple authentications per second, it is useful to enable the Thread Logging feature.  Each authentication is assigned a unique thread number in HEX and that value can be used to trace an authentication through a congested log.
