The SYSTEM:.*dcd.* unknown encaps_ohead; dev vlan, encaps .* flags.* message is generated by the dcd daemon during normal operation. This article documents an approach to understand this message.

SYMPTOMS:

A message similar to the following is reported in syslog:

dcd[832]: %DAEMON-5: unknown encaps_ohead; dev vlan, encaps 71, flags 0x1, addr-fam 2

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

The message is generated by the dcd daemon when any of the below mentioned protocols and VLANs are configured:
  • Every time a routed VLAN interface is created
  • An interface is assigned to LAG, tagging, Multiple Spanning Tree Instance (MSTI) or VRRP
This is a log notice and not an error. It is not an indication to any problem as well.

CONFIRM CAUSES:

Check that either of these conditions exist in the configuration:
  • A VLAN interface is assigned to a routing protocol
  • Interfaces are assigned to LAG, tagging, MSTI, or VRRP

Solution:

The SYSTEM:.*dcd.* unknown encaps_ohead; dev vlan, encaps .* flags.* message is a log notice and not an error. It is not an indication of a problem.

This message can be removed by filtering these messages using the following:

user@switch# set system syslog file messages match "<!(.*encaps_ohead; dev vlan.*)"
