[EX] How to collect /var/log files from all EX Switch VC members using file archive compress method

Article ID: KB19620 KB Last Updated: 05 Apr 2021Version: 5.0

The "file archive compress" method can be used to collect all /var/log files from all members of an EX Switch Virtual Chassis (VC). This is useful for troubleshooting purposes or for providing detailed logs to Juniper Technical Assistance Center (JTAC).

This article explains how to collect these files using the method specified.

Use the commands listed below to archive /var/log/ directory files from Primary (FPC0) and Backup (FPC1):

root> file archive compress source /var/log/ destination /var/tmp/varlog-mem0

root> request session member 1 (use appropriate member id to login to that FPC)

root% cli

root> file archive compress source /var/log/ destination /var/tmp/varlog-mem1

root> exit

root% exit

root> file copy fpc1:/var/tmp/varlog-mem1.tgz fpc0:/var/tmp/

Now you can open a J-Web session to the EX switch by using http://<Ip-address-EX> and you can download the files using this path: Maintain > Files > Temporary Files (/var/tmp).

NOTE: Another method is by using the "tar" command from shell. This is documented in KB15186 - Alternate method using the tar command to collect /var/log files from all members of an EX Switch Virtual Chassis (VC).
