[Upgrade EX switch] Stage 3 - Upgrading EX series Devices

Summary:

This article documents Stage 3 – Operational Stage on Upgrading Juniper EX Switches.

To go directly to other stages of the Junos upgrade on an EX switch, consult the Resolution Guide -- Upgrading EX Series.


Note: Juniper Networks recommends scheduling a downtime when performing the Junos installation/upgrade.


Symptoms:

  • Best practice on upgrading Standalone / Virtual-chassis / EX 8200 Switches
  • Different procedures to upgrade on Juniper switches
  • Migrating Junos Version from 9.2 to 10.0
Solution:

The third stage of a Junos upgrade involves reviewing the 'Best Practice' documentation, and performing the actual commands to install the software.

At this stage, it is assumed that you have already downloaded your software package from the Junos website, and performed a backup of your configuration.  If you have not done so, refer to the following articles:

KB20350 - Stage 2 - Backup configuration

Perform the following steps for Stage 3:

Step 2.  Install Junos software. 

Important: Juniper Networks recommends scheduling a downtime when installing the Junos software.

J-Web (GUI)

Select the link below for the step-by-step procedure on installing the Junos software via the J-Web:
Note about the J-Web procedure instructions:
If you have downloaded the Junos software package in Stage 1 and copied it to a FTP or TFTP server, then follow the instructions under 'Installing Software Upgrades from a Server'.
If you have downloaded the Junos software package in Stage 1 to your PC, then follow the instructions under 'Installing Software Upgrades by Uploading Files'. You are ready to Upload the Package.
Installing Junos Software (J-Web procedure)



CLI

Select any of the following methods for instructions on installing the Junos software via the CLI:
  • Methods of installing the Junos software by copying the Junos package to the EX switch
    (Commonly used if you don't have a TFTP or FTP server):
    FTP
    USB
OR
  • Methods of installing the Junos software when the Junos package is located on an external source (TFTP or FTP server, or USB):
    TFTP
    FTP
    USB


Step 3.  If you encounter a problem during the installation (with the above methods), go to KB20464 - Stage 4 - Troubleshooting Upgrade Failure for troubleshooting upgrade failures.


Step 4.  Confirm Junos version that has been installed. 

Run the following command to verify the Junos version.

root@lab-4200# run show version
