[EX] How to install Junos from an external source such as an FTP server or a USB device

Summary:

This article provides step-by-step instructions for installing Junos on an EX Switch using the method where the Junos software package exists on an external server or remote location.

Solution:

The instructions for the Junos installation on an EX switch are covered in the Technical Documentation: Install Junos on EX Switch using CLI (steps 4-6). This article provides further clarification on this procedure.
Select the preferred method below:

Junos Installation Steps - with Junos software package on FTP server

Requirement:  The Junos software package downloaded in Stage 1 has been copied to the FTP server.  For this example, the FTP server is 172.17.28.28.  FTP uses anonymous login.
  1. Install Junos on the EX switch via the CLI (Command Line Interface) prompt:

    For Standalone devices:
    root@ex-4200:RE:0% cli
    root@ex-4200> request system software add ftp://172.17.28.28/<path>/<image name "jinstall-ex-4200-10.0S10.1-domestic-signed.tgz">
    For 8200 Series:
    % cli
    > request system software add ftp://172.17.28.28/<path>/<image name "jinstall-ex-8200-10.0S10.1-domestic-signed.tgz"> <RE ID - Routing engine of the 8200 Series>
    For Virtual Chassis:
    & cli
    > request system software add ftp://172.17.28.28/<path>/<image name "jinstall-ex-4200-10.0S10.1-domestic-signed.tgz"> member <Member ID-FPC ID of the Virtual chassis>   

     
  2. Reboot the EX switch:

    For Standalone devices:
    root@ex-4200> request system reboot
    For Virtual Chassis:
    root@ex-4200> request system reboot all member
    For 8200 series when rebooting/upgrading Backup:
    run request system reboot other-routing-engine -
    Reboot the system? [yes, no] (no) YES
     
  3. After the reboot has completed, log in and verify that the new version of the software is properly installed:
    user@switch> show version

    If you encounter a problem during the installation , go to Stage 4 for troubleshooting upgrade failures.
 

Junos Installation Steps - with Junos software package on USB

Requirement:  The Junos software package downloaded in Stage 1 has been copied to the USB.  Juniper recommends that the USB should be formatted to FAT32.  Refer to a Link for USB Port Specifications for an EX Series Switch.
  1. Install Junos on the EX switch via the CLI (Command Line Interface) prompt:

    Mount the USB device to the switch:

    root@ex-4200:RE:0% mount_msdosfs /dev/da1s1 /mnt 


    For Standalone devices:
    root@ex-4200:RE:0% cli
    root@ex-4200> request system software add /mnt/<image name "jinstall-ex-4200-10.0S10.1-domestic-signed.tgz">

    For 8200 Series
    root@ex-4200:RE:0% cli
    root@ex-4200> request system software add /mnt/<image name "jinstall-ex-4200-10.0S10.1-domestic-signed.tgz"> <Routing-Engine ID>
    For Virtual Chassis:
    root@ex-4200:RE:0% cli
    root@ex-4200> request system software add /mnt/<image name "jinstall-ex-4200-10.0S10.1-domestic-signed.tgz"> <Member-ID> 

     
  2. Reboot the EX switch:

    For Standalone devices:
    root@ex-4200> request system reboot
    For Virtual Chassis:
    root@ex-4200> request system reboot all member
    For 8200 series when rebooting/upgrading Backup:
    run request system reboot other-routing-engine -
    Reboot the system? [yes, no] (no) YES
     
  3. After the reboot has completed, log in and verify that the new version of the software is properly installed:
    user@switch> show version
