Article ID: KB21570 KB Last Updated: 11 Aug 2011Version: 1.0
Summary:
This article provides information about whether a firewall can send a POP request, before sending SMTP request, to the mail server while sending E-Mail notifications.
Symptoms:
POP before SMTP is a method of authorization used by mail servers to authorize a client, before it is able to send the mail. There are certain servers which, by default,  have this option enabled.

If such a server is configured in the firewall for sending E-mail notifications, the server will drop these mails because the firewall cannot send a POP request before SMTP request.

Solution:
Disable 'POP before SMTP' option on the mail server.
