Article ID: KB22860 KB Last Updated: 14 Feb 2017Version: 3.0
Summary:
This article provides information on how to change the way core files are saved in Junos.
Symptoms:
 When a router process generates a core file, the file is saved in /var/tmp/. You can change this default behavior by editing the configuration.
Cause:

Solution:
To disable the saving of core files and associated context information, include the no-saved-core-context statement at the [edit system] hierarchy level:

[edit system]
no-saved-core-context;

To save only the core files, include the saved-core-files statement at the [edit system] hierarchy level and specify the number of files to save:

[edit system]
saved-core-files number;
number is the number of core files to save and can be a value from 1 through 10.

To save the core files along with the contextual information, include the saved-core-context statement at the [edit system] hierarchy level:

[edit system]
saved-core-context;

The contexual information includes system log files and a copy of the current configuration.
The router saves each core file and its associated context in a compressed tar file named /var/tmp/process-name.core.core-number.tgz.
