Article ID: KB23580 KB Last Updated: 28 Jan 2013Version: 2.0
Summary:
This article describes the issue of the request system snapshot command not taking a snapshot on the backup RE of both of the members.

Symptoms:
The following methods are used to take a snapshot on XRE Virtual-Chassis members:

  • From the Primary XRE

  • From the local primary routing-engine of the individual EX8200 device.

When performing the above procedures, the following issues might occur:

  • When the following command is run from Primary XRE, it seems that it is performing the format; but after the end of snapshot process, the backup RE's backup partition still remains on an older image:
    run request system snapshot member 0 media internal re1 slice alternate

    {backup:1}
    root> show system snapshot media internal
    Information for snapshot on internal (/dev/da0s1a) (primary)
    Creation date: Mar 23 23:43:35 2012
    JUNOS version on snapshot:
    jbase : 11.3R4.2
    jcrypto-ex: 11.3R4.2
    jdocs-ex: 11.3R4.2
    jkernel-ex: 11.3R4.2
    jroute-ex: 11.3R4.2
    jswitch-ex: 11.3R4.2
    jweb-ex: 11.3R4.2
    jpfe-ex82x: 11.3R4.2
    Information for snapshot on internal (/dev/da0s2a) (backup)
    Creation date: Feb 17 03:36:13 2012
    JUNOS version on snapshot:
    jbase : ex-11.4R2
    jcrypto-ex: 11.4R2
    jdocs-ex: 11.4R2
    jkernel-ex: 11.4R2
    jroute-ex: 11.4R2
    jswitch-ex: 11.4R2
    jweb-ex: 11.4R2
    jpfe-ex82x: 11.4R2
  • When the same command is run on the primary or backup RE of member0 or 1 (EX8200 as line card, the following error message is generated and the snapshot is not taken:
    {backup:1}
    root> request system snapshot media internal slice alternate

    error: timeout waiting for response from member1
    error: timeout waiting for response from member1
    error: internal media missing or invalid
    error: internal media missing or invalid
Cause:
In old Junos versions, when the request system snapshot slice alternate all-members was run from XRE, it did not take the snapshot the backup RE of the EX8200 member chassis. So, it was necessary to manually run the snapshot for the backup RE of EX8200 member chassis. But, from 11.3R7, 11.4R4, 12.1R3, 12.2R1, 12.3R1or later, with the above command, it is possible to take the snapshot of the all the primary and backup SREs.
Solution:
On the backup SRE, if the request system snapshot media internal slice alternate local command is run, a snapshot is successfully created. The local term is a key here:
{backup:1}
root> request system snapshot media internal slice alternate local

{backup:1}
root> show system snapshot media internal
