[Junos] How to monitor Routing Engine's CPU Load Averages using SNMP

Article ID: KB23726 KB Last Updated: 26 Dec 2019Version: 2.0
Summary:

This article shows which MIB OIDs to use for monitoring CPU Load Averages in 1, 5, and/or 15 minute timespans.

Solution:
Since Junos 11.3 release, a new set of MIBs were introduced to track the Routing Engine's CPU Load Averages for 1, 5, and 15 minute timespans. The relevant MIBs are listed under the jnxOperatingEntry tree:
jnxOperating1MinLoadAvg.9.1.0.0 (.1.3.6.1.4.1.2636.3.1.13.1.20.9.1.0.0)
jnxOperating5MinLoadAvg.9.1.0.0 (.1.3.6.1.4.1.2636.3.1.13.1.21.9.1.0.0)
jnxOperating15MinLoadAvg.9.1.0.0 (.1.3.6.1.4.1.2636.3.1.13.1.22.9.1.0.0)
Run the following command to see these MIBs in the CLI on a SRX:
root@srx> show snmp mib walk jnxOperatingEntry | match LoadAvg.9.1.0.0
jnxOperating1MinLoadAvg.9.1.0.0 = 18
jnxOperating5MinLoadAvg.9.1.0.0 = 12
jnxOperating15MinLoadAvg.9.1.0.0 = 8
 The 9.1.0.0 suffix index corresponds to the Routing Engine:
root@srx> show snmp mib walk jnxOperatingEntry | match OperatingDescr.9.1.0.0
jnxOperatingDescr.9.1.0.0 = Routing Engine

If this is a Chassis Cluster/HA environment, then there will be a separate suffix (9.2.0.0) for the Routing Engine in node1:
jnxOperatingDescr.9.1.0.0 = node0 Routing Engine
jnxOperatingDescr.9.2.0.0 = node1 Routing Engine
The values from these MIBs correspond to the Load averages reported in the "show chassis routing-engine" command in the CLI:

root@Juniper> show chassis routing-engine
Routing Engine status:
    Temperature                 52 degrees C / 125 degrees F
    Total memory              1024 MB Max   625 MB used ( 61 percent)
      Control plane memory     560 MB Max   459 MB used ( 82 percent)
      Data plane memory        464 MB Max   162 MB used ( 35 percent)
    CPU utilization:
      User                       4 percent
      Background                 0 percent
      Kernel                     9 percent
      Interrupt                  0 percent
      Idle                      86 percent
    Model                          RE-SRX100H
    Serial ID
    Start time                     2012-04-25 15:27:25 UTC
    Uptime                         23 hours, 44 minutes, 13 seconds
    Last reboot reason             Router rebooted after a normal shutdown.
    Load averages:                 1 minute   5 minute  15 minute
                                       0.06       0.06       0.06
