[WX] CMS unable to take WX configuration backups

Summary:

This article describes the issue of CMS, which is installed on Windows server 2008 and scheduled to take backup of multiple WX device configurations, being unable to take WX configuration backups. The backup task status remains in the running state.

Symptoms:
  • When scheduling a backup, CMS modifies the backup files and keeps them in C:\Program Files (x86)\Juniper Networks\CMS\data\configuration\config\device\RCS.

  • If the CMS service does not have write or modify permission, the backup will fail.

  • Compared to other operating systems, Windows 2008 server has additional security, which is not allowing CMS service to add the backup files to the backup folder.

  • So an additional configuration has to be added.
Cause:

Solution:
As per the 5.7.2 CMS admin guide, change the logon account of the JuniperCMS service on Windows 2008 server from the default Local System account to another Admin user account.

Perform the following procedure:
  1. Create a new user account for CMS.

  2. Provide the write and modify permissions for the CMS installation folder to this new user account; if not already present.

  3. Delete the existing backup files; except the readme file under C:\Program Files\Juniper Networks\CMS\data\configuration\config\device\RCS. If CMS is installed on the 64-bit OS, the location is C:\Program Files (x86)\Juniper Networks\CMS\data\configuration\config\device\RCS.

  4. Change the logon account of the JuniperCMS service:

    1. Click Start > Run, type services.msc, and click OK.

    2. In the Services window, right-click JuniperCMS and then click Stop.

    3. Right-click JuniperCMS, select Properties, and then click the Log On tab.

    4. Select the This Account radio button, type the new account name, type and confirm the account password, and click OK.

    5. Right-click JuniperCMS and click Start.
