[Archive] How to configure the authentication mode for a WLC device

Article ID: KB24224 KB Last Updated: 10 Oct 2020Version: 2.0
This article provides information on how to configure the authentication mode for a WLC device.

  • For security reasons, a WLC device has to authenticate the RingMaster, which is trying to push down configuration changes. By default, RingMaster provides the enable password to the WLC device.

  • Alternatively, you can configure RingMaster to provide a username and password. These credentials will be checked against either credentials stored in the Local User Database on the controller or credentials stored on a Radius server.

  • The credentials, which are used by the RingMaster authenticating to the controller, are used to logon to RingMaster; not the credentials that can be configured in the RM GUI.
  1. After configuring the access control for a RingMaster user, select the required controller in RingMaster and on the right hand side, click Authentication Mode.

  2. Select AAA and click Next. The Username and/or Password are irrelevant. Select the Create to configure Admin Access Rules option.

  3. In this example, ** User is being used. You have decided to authenticate against the Local User database and not to configure Accounting.

  4. Add a user to the Local database. The Authorization attribute has to be set to 6 (Administrative).

  5. Deploy the changes and test if a WLC will accept changes being made by the RingMaster.
