Summary:

This article describes the following aspects related to the channel change when radar is detected:

  • Does the AP automatically change channels?
  • If the AP doesn't change channels, what does it do during the 30 minute quiet period?
  • What happens if radar is detected during the 30 minute quiet period?

Solution:

Q1. Does the AP automatically change channels?

A1. No, the AP does not automatically change channels. Channels are managed by either the wireless controller or by RingMaster (NMS). The network controller may change channels automatically if it is configured to do so. RingMaster does not automatically change the channel.

Q2. If the AP doesn't change channels, what does it do during the 30 minute quiet period?

A2. During the 30 minute quiet period, the AP continues to monitor the channel for radar.

Q3. What happens if radar is detected during the 30 minute quiet period?

A3. If radar is detected during the 30 minute quiet period, then the 30 minute quiet period is restarted.

Q4. What happens at the end of the 30 minute quiet period?

A4. At the end of the 30 minute quiet period, the AP has not detected radar on the channel for 30 minutes. This satisfies the 60 second initial channel check. At the end of 30 minutes of continuously monitoring the channel for radar and not detecting it, the AP enables the radio transmitter and starts beaconing.

Q5. What happens if the channel is changed during the 30 minute quiet period?

A5. If the channel is changed during the 30 minute quiet period, the AP performs the 60 second initial channel check.
