[SRX] The 'KERN_ARP_DUPLICATE_ADDR' syslog message is generated in the chassis cluster for the 'Fxp0' interface

Article ID: KB25221 KB Last Updated: 24 Jul 2020Version: 2.0
Summary:

This article describes the issue of the KERN_ARP_DUPLICATE_ADDR syslog message being generated in the chassis cluster for the Fxp0 interface.

Symptoms:
  • Unable to manage the chassis cluster nodes via the FXP0 interface.

  • The following activities are noticed:

    • The /kernel: KERN_ARP_DUPLICATE_ADDR syslog message is generated. The duplicate IP address <ip address> is sent from address: < mac-address >.

    • The connection is dropped and pings are also dropped.

    • The login is switching between node 0 and node 1.

Cause:

Incorrect fxp0 configuration:

  • Fxp0 is an out of band management interface that is used to manage the device.

  • You have to exclusively configure the fxp0 interface for each node. If they are globally configured, it will be for both of the nodes and this could cause IP conflict.

  • IP conflict occurs when 2 ports reply with the same IP address for an ARP request.

Solution:
  • To eliminate such issues, configure them under the groups [edit groups] hierarchy for individual nodes and do not have any global FXP0 configuration.

  • For the correct FXP0 configuration in High Availability, refer to KB17161-Cannot manage SRX via fxp0 in chassis cluster.
