[SRX] How to convert a SPU from CP-flow to a dedicated CP on the SRX3400 and SRX3600

Article ID: KB25257 KB Last Updated: 02 Oct 2013Version: 2.0
Summary:
This article provides information on how to convert a SPU (Services Processing Unit) from CP-flow to a dedicated CP on the SRX3400 and SRX3600.
Symptoms:
How to convert a SPU from CP-flow to a dedicated CP on the SRX3000 platform.
Cause:

Solution:
By default, SRX3400 and SRX3600 devices are in the combo mode, as per the perspective of the SPC (Services Processing Card), which means that the SPC acts as both the CP SPU and FLOW SPU. With this approach, only half the resources of the SPC are given to the Central Point (CP). This may decrease the performance, when the traffic is high. To overcome this, there is a way to make an SPC a dedicated CP, which provides it full resources for flow processing.

To achieve this, you need to install the Extreme license:  Expanded Performance and Capacity License (SRX3K-EXTREME-LTU). This license also increases the session limit on the CP. This license has to be added on the cluster (both nodes). Make sure that there are at least two SPCs on both the nodes to achieve this. Both the nodes have to be rebooted for this license to take effect.

To add license on the SRX device, refer to request system license add. For more information on Extreme license and outputs, refer to KB24134 - How to check if Extreme license (SRX3K-EXTREME-LTU) is successfully installed on SRX3000 Series devices.

After the reboot, a dedicated CP looks like this:
