[EOL/EOE] [WLA/WLC] The WLA device will not boot when two entries are present in the DNS record that resolves the domain name of the WLC device

Article ID: KB25572 KB Last Updated: 03 Dec 2020Version: 2.0

Note: A product listed in this article has either reached hardware End of Life (EOL) OR software End of Engineering (EOE).  Refer to End of Life Products & Milestones for the EOL, EOE, and End of Support (EOS) dates.

This article describes the issue of WLA devices not booting, when two entries are used in the DNS record, which resolves the domain name of the WLC device.

  • For redundancy purposes, in the absence of the cluster feature, you might have two IP addresses in the DNS record, which point to two different WLC devices.

  • When the WLA device tries to boot by using the parameters in the static boot configuration, it will receive a DNS reply, which contains both IP addresses in a given order (for example, the order is (x,y) and address x is unreachable; whereas y is reachable).

  • The WLA will try to contact only address x and as that address is not reachable, the WLA might get stuck in a loop; without the ability to boot up correctly.
  • Ensure that DNS uses the IP addresses in a round-robin manner. When the WLA device issues another DNS query, it will receive the addresses in a different order (y,x); as y is reachable, the WLA device will boot correctly.

  • Alternatively, you can use the DHCP option 43 feature. When using this feature, the WLA will contact all the addresses it receives; until it manages to boot.
