10GbE/40GbE/100GbE Link Fault Signaling (LFS) syslog indication for various card types

Article ID: KB26159 KB Last Updated: 25 Feb 2019Version: 7.0
Summary:

10GbE LAN-PHY/40GbE/100GbE supports Link Fault Signaling (LFS) for the purpose of detecting and reporting physical layer fault conditions on transmit and receive ports. 10GbE WAN-PHY uses SONET/SDH LOS and RDI alarms for the same purpose. This article describes how LFS works for each router and FPC card type.

Symptoms:

10GbE LAN-PHY/40GbE/100GbE LFS operates between remote Reconciliation Sublayers (RS) and local RS. Link faults detected between remote RSs and local RSs are received by local RSs. Only the RS originates Remote Fault signals. When this Local Fault status reaches an RS, the RS stops sending MAC data, and continuously generates a Remote Fault status on the transmit data path. When Remote Fault status is received by an RS, the RS stops sending MAC data, and continuously generates Idle control characters. When the RS no longer receives fault status messages, it returns to normal operation, sending MAC data. Junos OS 10GbE LAN-PHY/40GbE/100GbE interfaces support the LFS feature, but there is a remarkable difference on syslog indication of the LFS for various FPC card types.

RS: Reconciliation Sublayer
LOS: Loss of Signal
RDI: Remote Defect Indication

Cause:
  • MX 10GbE LAN-PHY for DPC supports LFS; but local-fault and remote-fault are not logged on syslog by default. When a debug command is enabled, LFS event is logged on syslog.

  • MX 10GbE LAN-PHY for MPC (MQ) supports LFS; but local-fault and remote-fault are not logged on syslog. We can see LFS alarms by FPC VTY show command.

  • MX/T4000 10GbE LAN-PHY for MPC (XM/MQSS) supports LFS and logs its activity on syslog.

  • MX/T4000 100GbE for MPC (XM/MQSS) supports LFS and logs its activity on syslog.

  • T640/1600 10GbE LAN-PHY for both XENPAK/10GBASE-LR PIC supports LFS and logs its activity on syslog.

  • PTX 10GbE LAN-PHY/40GbE/100GbE supports LFS and logs its activity on syslog.

  • Finally, MX 10GbE WAN-PHY uses SONET/SDH LOS and RDI alarms for the same purpose, which gets logged on syslog.

Solution:

LFS event log level can vary on different Junos platforms, so you will need to set the proper syslog level to see LF/RF event on syslog.

[10GbE LAN-PHY]

  1. On MX 10GbE LAN-PHY, DPC supports LFS. However, it does not log local-fault and remote-fault on syslog by default. When a debug command is enabled, LFS event is logged on syslog when link state changes.
