[Archive] [WLA/WLC] WLC devices in a cluster do not support APs that are behind NAT devices

Article ID: KB26260 KB Last Updated: 10 Oct 2020Version: 3.0
This article describes the issue of WLC devices in a cluster not supporting APs that are behind NAT devices.

The Juniper WLAN supports APs to boot off of single WLCs or WLCs in a Mobility Domain, when the AP is behind a Network Address Translation (NAT) device; however this network deployment is not supported, if the WLCs are configured in a virtual cluster.
If an AP behind a NAT device is attempting to boot into a WLC virtual cluster, the AP will be able to initially reach the WLCs and they will show the AP in the booting state; however, the AP will eventually time out and fail to boot up.
The Virtual Cluster feature design was not built to accommodate APs behind NAT.
If APs are required to boot behind a NAT device, it will be required to direct the APs to individual WLCs in a Mobility Domain. This will require that at least one WLC in the Mobility Domain is not Cluster enabled.

The APs that are behind NAT devices will have to be configured on the WLC device that is not Cluster enabled (and the APs must not be configured in the Cluster). All of the WLCs in the Mobility Domain, including those in the Cluster, will now know how to direct these APs to the non-Clustered and enabled WLC, as this information of AP homing is shared across a Mobility Domain.
