How to configure OCSP on a ScreenOS device

Article ID: KB26312 KB Last Updated: 21 Nov 2012Version: 1.0
This article provides information on how to configure OCSP on a ScreenOS device.

It is important to perform certification validation for the certificates that are installed on the device. OCSP is a scalable option for this purpose. By default, CRLs can be used to check the revocation status of the certificates; but OCSP provides an alternative option in a timely and scalable manner.

  • The configuration of OCSP on a ScreenOS device means that the OCSP client has to be configured.

  • The device will send a OCSP request to a server, often known as OCSP responder.

  • The responder will return the OCSP response, which has the certificate's revocation status.

  • The device then verifies the status by using OSCP responder's certificate, which can be locally configured.

How to Specify the revocation check method:
set pki authority id_num cert-status revocation-check { CRL | OCSP | none }
where id_num is the identification number for the certificate. The following example specifies OCSP revocation checking:
set pki authority 3 cert-status revocation-check ocsp
The ID number 3 identifies the certificate of the CA.

How to specify the OCSP responder URL:
set pki authority id_num cert-status ocsp url url_str
For example:
set pki authority 5 cert-status ocsp url http:\\
