Article ID: KB26467 KB Last Updated: 10 Dec 2012Version: 1.0
Summary:
This article provides information about the Enhanced PIM slots that are available on SSG500 devices.
Symptoms:
The in misc/out misc or overrun error messages are generated on the PIM interfaces that are installed on the SSG500 device.

Cause:

Solution:
SSG500 series devices have PIM slots that are identified as enhanced slots, which can give better performance to other PIM slots on the device.

The following Table displays the PIM types that can be installed in the slots of an SSG 550 device. The E (Enhanced) slot, which is located on some of the slots, identifies where enhanced PIMs (ePIMs) can be installed:

PIM slots (SSG520):

SlotPIM Types
1 - WANPIM or uPIM only
2 - WANPIM or uPIM only
3 - WANPIM, uPIM, or ePIM E (Enhanced Slot)
4 - WANPIM or uPIM only
5 - WANPIM or uPIM only
6 - WANPIM, uPIM, or ePIM E (Enhanced Slot)

The following table lists the PIM types that can be installed in the slots of an SSG550 device. The E (Enhanced slot), which is located on some of the slots, identifies where the enhanced PIMs (ePIMs) can be installed:

PIM slots (SSG 550):

SlotPIM Types
 1- WANPIM or uPIM only
2 - WANPIM, uPIM, or ePIM E (Enhanced Slot)
3 - WANPIM, uPIM, or ePIM E (Enhanced Slot)
4 - WANPIM or uPIM only
5 - WANPIM, uPIM, or ePIM E (Enhanced Slot)
6 - WAN PIM, uPIM, or ePIM E (Enhanced Slot)

Note: 'uPIM' refers to Universal PIMs and 'ePIM' refers to Ethernet Enhanced PIM.

If the in misc/out misc or overrun errors are being generated on the PIM interfaces, which are installed on the SSG500 device, then try using the Enhanced slots. If this does not help in resolving the error message, then open a case with JTAC.

Caution: PIMs are not hot-swappable. Always switch off the device, before inserting or removing PIMs.

For more information, refer to the PIM and Mini-PIM Installation and Configuration Guide and SSG 500-series Hardware Installation and Configuration Guide.
