[M Series] Platform does not support RADIUS interim-update for L2TP

Article ID: KB27877 KB Last Updated: 24 Feb 2020Version: 2.0

In an environment where the M Series router acts as an L2TP network server, the RADIUS interim-update is not supported. Customers can switch to the MX Series for this feature.

In recent Junos OS releases, accounting can be configured under the access profile stanza on the M-series platform:

lab@router-re0> show configuration access profile l2tp_subscribers
accounting-order radius;
authentication-order radius;
radius-server { {
port 1812;
accounting-port 1813;
secret "$ABC123"; ## SECRET-DATA
accounting {
order radius;
update-interval 10;
statistics volume-time;

But the accounting stanza does not work, because L2TP support on M7i/M10i platforms is very old, and does not support these features.

The L2TP solution is documented as per the link below. Anything outside is not supported.

Configuring RADIUS Authentication for an L2TP Client and Profile

The accounting stanza was added in authd in recent releases, mainly for broadband remote access server support. It is a platform independent configuration, which is why a customer can configure it on a M7i or M10i router.

In the MX Series with the broadband remote access server supported release, L2TPD is refreshed to JL2TPD, which supports more subscriber access features.

Juniper Networks has no plans to enhance/support M Series L2TP stack. Customers can switch to the MX Series for this feature.
