[SRX] How to connect PXE Hosts to Microsoft RIS (Remote Installation Service) Server via SRX acting as a DHCP Relay agent

This article describes a procedure for configuring an SRX device as a relay agent in an environment that has DHCP and Microsoft RIS on separate systems.


DHCP clients are getting the IP address; however, the following error is seen:

PXE boot giving the error PXE-T04: Access violation PXE-E36: Error received from TFTP server PXE-M0F: Exiting Broadcom PXE ROM.

The above error comes because the PXE Boot clients are not able to fetch the boot file from the RIS server.

The client sends DHCP Discover and asks for IP address and PXE boot server. DHCP server replies with DHCP offer and other network configuration settings. DHCP offer is also received from RIS server which sends PXE boot server. DHCP request is sent from client to DHCP server requesting the IP address. DHCP acknowledge is sent from DHCP server that it can have this IP address.

[PXE Boot Clients] ------------- [SRX] -------------- DHCP Server
                                                 RIS Server

Clients are connected to the SRX on vlan.2 interface.

The configuration would be:

#set forwarding-options helpers bootp interface vlan.2 server <DHCP server ip>
#set forwarding-options helpers bootp interface vlan.2 server <RISserverip>
